Refinery for Production of Potable Water

Description:

Water refineries treat water coming mainly from surface waters or wells. The untreated water when it reaches the refinery contains odorous gases, pathogens, solids (soil and leaves), suspended and colloidal particles, protozoa, algae etc.

The following procedure enables the removal of all the above pollutants in order to produce potable water:

  • Solids removal
  • Decolourization and oxidation of inorganic and organic matter and deactivation of all microorganisms, protozoa and others, with chlorine (Prechlorination)
  • Water aeration
  • Flocculation of colloidal / organic particles with aluminum sulfate and anionic polyelectrolyte
  • Precipitation
  • Water filtration in sand filters
  • Lime addition(for correction of pH)
  • Postchlorination

Advantages:

  • Reliable method widely used
  • Simple and operational facility with low requirements for qualified personnel
  • Low operational costs

Case Study:

WATER TREATMENT PLANT AT PINEIOS ARTIFICIAL LAKE

The project consists of the design and construction of a potable water treatment plant at the artificial lake of Pineios in Ilia and the six-month trial operation. The project includes all the necessary works from water abstraction to the outlet networks connected to the distribution system.
The plant consists of the following units:

  • Water abstraction – water supply pipe
  • Screening
  • Ozonation unit
  • pH correction unit
  • Rapid mixing
  • Flocculation
  • Precipitation
  • Refining unit (filters)
  • Disinfection with chlorine gas
  • Sludge treatment plant (thickening tank, dewatering unit)
