Monitoring and control system of the wastewater toxicity in the city of Ioannina

MESOGEOS S.A. signed a contract with the Municipal Authority for the Water Supply and Sewage of Ioannina for the supply and commissioning of a monitoring and control system of the wastewater toxicity in the industrial area of Ioannina. More specifically, so far the wastewater of the industrial area of Ioannina has not been treated separately from the municipal waste water of the city. Instead, it has been distributed to the central municipal waste water plant and, as a result, there has been increased toxicity danger for the biomass of secondary treatment. To eliminate the danger, Mesogeos installed an equalization tank for the industrial wastewater upstream the waste water treatment plant. This system comprises a wastewater toxicity meter and a storage tank where wastewater is transfered in the event toxicity is measured. When the meter stops measuring toxicity, the stored wastewater is pumped at such a rate that toxicity is eliminated. In addition, the company installed a control unit at the exit of the municipal wastewater plant of Ioannina so as to monitor the basic chemical parameters in the effluent of the facility.

The installation of the two above mentioned units enables the Municipality of Ioannina to acquire an integrated control system, which monitors:

A) the whole flow of the industrial area of the city and protects the municipal wastewater treatment plant from toxic waste water, and

B) the final effluent of the municipal wastewater treatment plant so as to prevent any environmental violations, to abide by the legislation requirements and essentially protect the environment and public health effectively.
